On a practical note, Hilo has notoriously wet weather, so pack a travel umbrella. Also, resist any urge to take a souvenir rock from Volcanoes National Park. They are considered to have a spiritual quality, and the park is their home. The Hilo post office receives dozens of packages of returned rocks each year from folks who believe they were the cause of bad luck. Due to the enormous mountains and volcanos on the Big Island, the temperature and precipitation amounts vary tremendously across the island. Once you park, you are basically at the waterfalls lookout point. These waterfalls near Hilo are located at Wailuku River State Park. Hilo is the departure point for shore excursions to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state. This is the Big Island’s newest black sand beach, created in 2018 because of the lava flows. Walking to Hilo takes about an hour and there is no sidewalk. A free shuttle bus from the Hilo Hattie store takes you from the port to the centre of the city and allows you to do some shopping. Stop at this lush park and check out the 80-foot rainbow falls.
